Dance Like Nobody's Watching

I've started making a series of videos with this title. I've always loved the expression 'Dance Like Nobody's Watching' because it encourages us to let go of inhibitions and feel the pure joy when we dance with freedom.

Recently, I've been putting on some music and letting my body just move and respond with next to no planning or thought. I used to do it a lot when I was younger, but life got busy and I stopped making time for it. Then coronavirus lockdown happened and I felt compelled to just let loose again. It was great to have the time and it really helped having a channel through which I could express myself during such a difficult and emotionally challenging time. I've read it's great for the brain too - dancing freestyle helps people think more laterally when it comes to problem solving. I needed to do a lot of that, having to adapt to the changing times.

The dancing in these videos is more personal and emotive, so quite a departure from what I teach. Like other forms of performing, dancing is like acting and the songs I've chosen aren't necessarily a reflection of what I'm feeling, but merely songs I like. That could be because of some key words in the track, the raw emotion coming from the singer's voice or the intricacies in the music. The great thing about this kind of dancing, whether it's sad or happy, it always makes me feel better afterwards. It's a great way of releasing energy and emotions.

I hope you enjoy watching! Hopefully it might even inspire you to dance at home and let loose. It doesn't matter how old you are or how good you are at dancing. It's about the freedom of movement and expression!

Please 'LIKE' the video if you enjoy watching. It's always good to know if it resonates with people and it will encourage me to do more!

2. Say You Love Me - Jessie Ware

Freestyle - One Take

1. Better Off Without Me - Jack Savoretti

Freestyle - One Take

4. One Sweet Day - Mariah Carey & Boys II Men

Freestyle - One Take

This song makes me think of my dad, who unexpectedly passed away when I was in my mid-twenties. It had a significant impact on my life and made me change direction. It lead me to where I am today.

3. Unsteady - X Ambassadors

This song really inspired me to dance in the first few months of lockdown. I tried to remain focused and positive as I navigated my way through the weeks of isolation and knew there would be so many other people out there who would also be feeling the stress and strain of it all.

6. Alone - Jessie Ware

Freestyle - One Take

I thought it was time I did another positive, happy, feel-good dance, incorporating elements of West Coast Swing.

5. Hold On - Derek Hough

Freestyle - One Take

This was another one of those songs that motivated me through lockdown. It was like a reminder to hang in there and that things would be ok, eventually!
